SHA256, an algorithm used in the cryptographic hash function used in bitcoin, stands for Secure Hashing Algorithm and 256 relates to the resulting 256-bit hash.[1]

SHA256 is mentioned (as SHS-256) in Satoshi Nakamoto's bitcoin white paper as a non-exclusive example of a hashing function that can be used in a proof-of-work system like bitcoin's.[2]
