SHA256 is the name of an algorithm used in a cryptographic hash function. SHA stands for Secure Hashing Algorithm and 256 relates to the resulting 256-bit hash.[1]

SHA256 is mentioned in the Satoshi Nakamoto bitcoin white paper as a non-exclusive example of a usable in a proof-of-work system.[2]
