Northern Trust Corp. is an investment management, asset and fund administration, fiduciary, and banking services provider. The company offers its services primarily to corporations, financial institutions, and individuals who hold large amounts of capital.[1] It also features blockchain-based private equity fund administration services.[2]

Blockchain-based capital calls

Northern Trust announced in 2017 that it had partnered with IBM to launch a blockchain-based private equity project. The project built its blockchain off of Hyperledger Fabric, a distributed ledger built by IBM, as well as a number of other companies. A press release on Northern Trust's website said the project was intended to create a method of private equity administration that is more efficient, secure, and transparent.[3] The company won two U.S. patents for distributed ledger technology inventions in June 2018.[4] In November, Northern Trust successfully processed its first live capital call using distributed ledger technology.[5][6]
