The Lightning Network is a software protocol built "on top of" the existing blockchain used by bitcoin. Its goal is to improve the cost of and speed at which bitcoin transactions take place in order to make bitcoin a viable method of payment for goods and services. The company that is developing the Lightning Network, Lightning Labs, is also working on integrating this technology with other blockchains, such as Litecoin.[1]
