Bitwage is a company that specializes in providing HR and payroll services, including digital asset payroll services, for international businesses, especially ones that rely on remote and/or contract employees.[1]

Overview

Bitwage was founded in 2014 in San Francisco, California. The company's CEO and co-founder, Jonathan Chester, told Bitcoin Magazine that Bitwage seeks to address problems often encountered by companies that try to pay their employees in cryptocurrency, since "traditional payroll and payroll tax systems are designed for the fiat world." In January 2019, the company announced that it had partnered with Simply Efficient HR, a Texas-based payroll and HR firm, to help the company provide their customers with payroll and HR compliance services for employees being paid in bitcoin and Ether. Bitwage had been running a beta version of their service on Paxful, a peer-to-peer cryptocurrency marketplace, since November 2018.[2][3]

Products and Services

Bitwage's primary service is providing a way for businesses to pay their workers in cryptocurrency. Part of their services include, for businesses based in the U.S. (including Puerto Rico), providing W2 forms, tax withholding, and other HR and payroll compliance obligations to the U.S. government for employees being paid in bitcoin and Ether. The company also seeks to use these services to make it easier for companies with banking issues to pay their employees.[4]
